COASTAL GARDEN ON A TERRACED SLOPE
A steeply sloping, overgrown garden was transformed into a series of elegant terraces with drifts of soft planting, a wildlife pond and sitting areas. The slope, once a challenge, became an asset sheltering vthe garden from salt winds and allowing a far greater range of planting.
Overlooking the Danestream Valley, the garden's steep slope and hazardous steps meant the space was underused and difficult to access. The brief was to create a modern garden with naturalistic planting, rich in colour, texture and wildlife, and designed for year-round enjoyment and entertaining.
DESIGN RESPONSE
A Garden Reimagined
The steps were replaced with a gently sloping curved path that winds between new terraces, retained with oak sleepers set vertically for a softened profile. A cantilevered deck projects over the wildlife pond, creating a dramatic focal point and a sheltered seating area.
Multiple terraces at different levels provide spaces for dining and relaxing, with careful consideration of views and garden lighting for evening use.
PLANTING APPROACH
Soft, Layered Planting for a Coastal Climate.
An orchard and kitchen garden occupy the lower level, while sheltered, more tender plants are positioned in the lee of the slope. Drifts of wildlife-friendly perennials, grasses and shrubs provide seasonal interest, movement and habitat, creating a vibrant yet harmonious landscape that thrives in the coastal climate.
