Inspired by the meadows and open habitats of the New Forest, this contemporary garden combines sweeping drifts of grasses and long-flowering perennials with simple gravel paths, creating a relaxed landscape rich in colour, movement and wildlife.
New Forest Meadow Garden
Designed for keen gardeners with a love of naturalistic planting, the brief was to create a garden that felt generous, immersive and full of seasonal interest. Using a formal layout with soft, overflowing planting, the design provides structure without formality.
DESIGN RESPONSE
A Garden in Constant Motion
Broad planting beds are organised by a grid of gravel paths, creating clear routes through the garden while framing a succession of views. The simple layout allows the planting to take centre stage, encouraging exploration and providing constantly changing perspectives.
Rather than relying on a single moment of peak colour, the garden has been designed to mature through the seasons, with flowers, grasses and seed heads extending interest from early summer well into autumn and beyond.
PLANTING APPROACH
Rooted in the New Forest
Drifts of ornamental grasses and long-flowering perennials create movement, texture and habitat, while carefully selected shrubs provide year-round structure. The planting palette is resilient, wildlife-friendly, and well suited to the character and climate of the New Forest, producing a garden that feels both contemporary and deeply connected to its surroundings.
